As we look back on our work over the past year, we see a common theme: we use Touch Designer, a lot. This robust visual development platform allows us to create rich, dynamic environments with ease. Here is a look at some of our favorite projects as of late, all developed in Derivative’s Touch Designer.

Dick Clark Productions

In conjunction with DCP and Samsung, we created a Social Video Wall for the red carpet at the Hollywood Film Awards, the American Music Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, and a few other high-profile award shows. We used Touch Designer as our 3D engine for animations, triggers and displaying social content.

Our Social Wall displayed hashtagged posts, music videos and other curated visual media. The wall served as a backdrop as presenters interviewed celebrities on the red carpet. We had a number of music videos and other clips at the ready, which we displayed as certain well-known artists were interviewed. The wall also became a venue for performances from a select group of up-and-coming artists. We had a dedicated video line from our server to the broadcast control booth, allowing for posts and other media to be featured in the award shows’ broadcasts. The system was built in Touch Designer, with Python backend interacting with both Instagram and Twitter’s API via our proprietary social moderation platform.

Instagram

We also created a similar Social Wall experience for Instagram at the X Games Austin 2014. Instagram wanted to establish a large footprint at the games by way of occupying visual space along walkways between different event venues. We built a large video wall and and used Touch Designer to display aggregated live content from Instagram. Attendees posted pictures and footage to Instagram throughout the event and hashtagged them: “#XGamesAustin”. These hashtagged posts, along with all other geo-fenced Instagram posts, were aggregated into BLI’s custom moderation tool. The attendee-generated media was displayed in real-time in a fresh and ever-changing configuration.

More to come…

We are currently working on more projects with Touch Designer and will keep you posted as they are released.
