This week in the Spotlite, Slack is upping your chat game, Windows 10 is making it easier to bring your creations to life and VR is all the rage.

Slack

Slack, is there a better system for sending memes and custom emojis to your co-workers? At BLI we have been Slack fans for a year or so now, and we have gotten it to a nice customized state. It is a really nice platform for chatting with employees, or multiple teams working on the same project. We currently have three shared chats with other companies for projects that we are working on and it has been exceedingly helpful.

Medium.com is a fan of the chat platform as well, and they have brought us some tips for getting the most out of the slack experince. From smart searching to custom emoji creation, this is a thorough list of everything that you need to maximize your slack-fu. :bagels: :ludacris: (If you were on our slack channel that would be hilarious.)

Windows 10 integrates Autodesk's open platform for 3D printing

Windows 10 is here, and so far there has been a pretty warm reception. Like most OS releases, the buzz is all about the new features and one of the most anticipated in tech and DIY circles is the ability to 3D print directly from a variety of programs.

Speaking of programs, there is word going around that Autodesk and Microsoft are working to integrate Spark, Autodesk’s open-source creation platform, into Windows 10. This is really exciting, as it will mean a good and useful 3D creation and printing platform is baked into your new OS. Hopefully this is the future of OS integration, we want to be able to model and print from anywhere, maybe even our Windows phones?

VR Social Platform

The new Nintendo NX console is shrouded in a fog of speculation and rumor right now, everyone is guessing how Nintendo will be able to stay current with the recent set of next gen consoles that have been released. One of the things that Nintendo has been talking about is VR and it’s place in Nintendo’s future. Shigeru Miyamoto has said:

“The current types of virtual reality aren't really a good fit for Nintendo's philosophy of trying to create entertainment that people can play together in the living room. We're constantly looking at different technology and experimenting with different elements of it, but we're not feeling virtual reality is currently in a place where it's ready to be released – as a product that fits with our philosophy of fitting in the living room.”

This statement has led to speculation that Nintendo is working on a more “social” form of VR interaction. There is really no word on what this might look like, but it is certainly within the ideals of Nintendo, and would be similar to the Wii motion controller release ahead of that technology being commonplace. We are keeping our ears to the ground for new leaks, so stay tuned to our Twitter feed for updates.

SFVR #10

SFVR#10 is taking place August 18th at Mighty nightclub in San Francisco. This is the best place to learn about all the new and upcoming happenings in the VR community. We always have a great time going to these and this is looking to be one of the biggest events yet. Mighty is a great venue and this event promises to have over 400 VR developers, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts sharing their ideas, projects and advice. If you are a current VR programmer, or just want to know more about what is out there in the world of VR content, this is the place to be.
