#Metaverse

BLI favorites OTOY and Oculus are coming together to get the community to push the bounds of what VR can be. OTOY is asking participants to “Render the Metaverse” and create a custom 360 panorama using Octane render and Oculus Rift. We have done stories on Octane before and it is a pretty amazing render engine so we are excited to see what everyone can produce.

The contest is going on now and submissions need to be sent by July 26th at 11:59 pm (hows that for specific) and the grand prize is $25,000 so its probably time to dust off the ol’ render engine and make the future panoramic.

Practical effects anyone? Max is back and so is original director George Miller to give us the next installment of the down and dirty down under hero. Planning for this movie started back in 2001 and it has been meticulously brought together to honor the spirit of the originals while making the most of current technology. George Miller has said that this is a practical effects movie ( yes that stuff is blowing up in RL) that was made possible by the freedom of digital cameras and technology.

The crew had to move from Australia to Namibia to film as the desert in Australia had unprecedented rainfall and was covered in wildflowers… not exactly post apocalyptic. So to Namibia it was and the challenges that come with filming in that environment. The crew chose to use Alexa Cameras in ARRIRAW mode to capture the principal photography and a handful of Canon 5Ds to crash into things. The use of small, portable and cheap(er) cameras let the filmmakers do things with real cameras and effects that had only previously been done in computers. Sometimes it takes new technology to do things the old way.

#SVVR

VR is getting bigger and better than ever and SVVR is the best place to go to see what the future holds. The Silicon Valley VR conference was held May 18th and 19th at the San Jose Convention Center and attendees were given a taste of some of the most amazing VR experiences and ideas that this hotbed of technology can offer. Samsung, Oculus, NASA, Dreamworks, Google as well as a host of digital filmmakers and game designers came together to hold speeches, discussions and workshops that challenged the state of the VR community and pushed everyone to make something amazing.

It is almost impossible to describe the number of exhibitors and speakers, but we really enjoyed Matt Apfel for Samsung’s keynote about Samsung’s future VR efforts and the roundtable on making a viable multi user experience in VR. At BLI we have been working on creating compelling multi-user experiences and it is always interesting to see what the rest of the community is doing to solve these complex and interesting problems. We love taking the opportunity to check out the awesome Bay Area dev community and there are always new and exciting events to explore.
